I’m a teacher, reader, freelance writer and children’s author. I taught 3rd grade and 6th grades for three years in Title I schools, then taught Kindergarten and 1st grade at international schools in Italy and Japan.
After learning Italian, muddling my way through Japanese, and marrying a non-English speaking Italian, I returned to the U.S. and found that I missed working in Title I schools. While my husband learned English, I taught 4th grade and took courses for an endorsement in teaching ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).
Four years of teaching ESOL and two daughters later, we moved back to Italy for five years, where our son was born. I stayed home with our kids, and that’s when I started writing. I wrote for magazines (American Baby, International Living, Parenting, Scholastic’s Instructor magazine and Writer’s Digest). In the meantime, I also took an online course in writing for children, joined the SCBWI and Verla’s, and found a wonderful critique group. After several years of writing and revising, my first middle grade novel, Flying the Dragon, was published by Charlesbridge on July 1, 2012.
After moving back to the U.S. and teaching ESOL for five years, I’m now an elementary school librarian in Fairfax, Virginia.
